CROWNS
AND BRIDGES
When a tooth has an exceptionally large filling, a crack, or a part that
has broken off, it may require a crown. A crown covers the portion of
the tooth that is visible in the mouth and serves to strengthen the tooth
by helping to hold it together. There are generally two types of crowns;
gold crowns and tooth-colored porcelain crowns.
When
a tooth is missing, one of the options for replacing it is a fixed partial
denture or bridge. a bridge consists of crowns on the teeth adjacent to
the missing tooth, connected by a false tooth which replaces the missing
tooth.
Bridges can replace one or more missing teeth, and like crowns, can be
either tooth colored or gold.

IMPLANTS
Implants are another option for replacing missing teeth. An implant is
composed of two parts, the titanium implant which is imbedded in the jawbone
and the crown which is placed on top of the implant to replace the tooth.
Implants may also be used to support a denture, which enables the patient
to obtain much greater chewing force with the denture.
Implants are the closest thing to a natural tooth.

DENTURES
When teeth are no loger able to chew as they once did due
to either gum disease or several large cavities, patients may elect to
have the natural teeth extracted and replaced with a denture. Dentures
should never be considered a functional replacement for natural teeth;
they are for aesthetic purposes only.
The chewing forces obtained by natural teeth will never be obtained with
a denture.

ROOT
CANALS
If
a tooth is badly broken or has a large cavity, it may damage the nerve
in the tooth, causing an abcess
around the tooth root. In order to allow the abcess to heal, the nerve
must be removed from the tooth.
This is referred to as a root canal. Once the nerve is removed, the tooth
is filled
and a permanent filling or crown is placed to restore the tooth.
