Sedation Dentistry

Relax and Get the Dental Treatment You Need with Sedation Dentistry

Are you delaying a trip to the dentist because you are nervous or anxious? Our Lawrence, Kansas, dental team can assure you that you are not alone. A considerable percentage of people avoid the dentist for the same reason. That is why at JayHawk Dental, we offer multiple types of sedation dentistry. When you think about sedation at the dentist, you may picture someone sleeping in a dental chair. However, most sedatives do not cause people to go to sleep. They are mainly used for calming.

What are the Benefits of Sedation Dentistry?

In addition to helping you relax; many patients opt for sedation at their dental appointments for several reasons. Sedation dentistry advantages include:

Less stress

Has very few side effects

Is completely safe

Allows more to be done during each visit

Makes it seem like procedures are done quickly

At JayHawk Dental of Lawrence, KS, we offer two types of sedation: IV and oral consciousness.

Nitrous Sedation Dentistry

Nitrous oxide, also called laughing gas, is the least invasive type of sedation dentistry. You can drive youself to and from the appointment without needing someone to escort you. Nitrous oxide is a gas you will inhale before and during the dental procedure. You will feel relaxed but not be asleep during the visit. The recovery time is just a few minutes and it will not add alot of time to your appointment.

IV Sedation Dentistry

Dr. Patrick Jankowski wants to ensure you are as relaxed and calm as possible, and IV sedation is one of the most acceptable ways to make that happen. Because it is dispensed directly into the bloodstream, the effects are felt almost instantly. Even if you don't go to sleep completely, it will probably feel as though you did. IV sedation is entirely safe; in fact, Dr. Jankowski is one of only about 30 general dentists in all of Kansas certified to use this kind of sedation.

IV sedation is perfect for the removal of wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth extraction can be lengthy, but we'll make it a breeze. Even if your wisdom teeth are not troubling you now, we recommend having them removed with the use of IV sedation. You will need to have an escort bring you and stay with you during the visit and be with you the rest of the day.

Oral Conscious Sedation

The other kind of sedation we offer at JayHawk Dental is oral conscious sedation. Oral-conscious sedation is a perfect choice if you have a little trouble with needles. Before your dental treatment, we will give you Valium, which provides moderate sedation. Valium will not cause you to fall asleep, but it will most likely numb your senses. You will have little memory of the procedure or any pain. If the thought of a visit to the dentist fills you with fear, sedation dentistry could be ideal for you.
